Design premise
The factory context is often overlooked, despite the high physical and mental stress of the work. The repetitiveness of tasks leads to musculoskeletal disorders, while the break, the only moment for recovery, is often experienced passively.
Upper limb disorders are increasing (88,499 INAIL reports in 2024) and lack structured solutions. Active breaks, proven effective in office environments, highlight the need for a design intervention in the industrial context, particularly during break time.
However, the main challenge is the lack of awareness around the issue: it is therefore necessary to design a solution that first raises awareness and then introduces a concrete change in behaviors.

Design question
How might we encourage workers to understand and adopt the concept of active breaks in order to stimulate a process of awareness and attitudinal change?
The solution

RE:PAUSE Sphere

The main Re:Pause touchpoint. A medical fitness device for the prevention and rehabilitation of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders. It uses an internal rotating element that, thanks to angular momentum, generates resistance and allows users to train arm muscles.

ROTOR

The two main features

SMART PRODUCT
Compared to competitors, Re:Pause Sphere is able to monitor exercise execution and guide the worker during performance.

“LIGHT” INTERACTION
Re:Pause Sphere offers a low cognitive effort interaction, similar to a fidget toy: it allows users to perform exercises in just a few minutes, anywhere and at any time.
How it work

SPRING-LOADED
It is enough to activate the rotor using a spring-loaded mechanism.

EXERCISE AND MONITORING
Once the rotation is started, perform rotational movements with the wrist. During execution, the device analyzes the movement and provides real-time feedback to guide the user.

The Gamification service

The Re:Pause Sphere and a dedicated app together provide full access to the system.
The core is gamification, used to motivate workers and make the activity more engaging, distancing it from the technical perception of fitness. Additionally, the system allows both workers and the company to monitor physical condition, enabling more targeted and effective interventions.

GAMIFICATION
How it work

EXERCISE
Each day, workers are given exercises in the form of challenges to complete, to be performed as effectively as possible during the workday.

SCORE
Once completed, the exercises are validated by bringing the phone close to the sphere. In this way, they are converted into collectible scores within the app, and all execution data is recorded and stored.
