Design premise

The idea behind this project originates from the observation of contemporary shared spaces — break areas, lounges, airports, cafés, and collaborative work environments — places characterized by dynamic flows and different modes of use. In these contexts, there is an increasing need for flexible and multifunctional products capable of optimizing space efficiently while adapting to both seated and standing use, even by multiple users at the same time.

To meet different needs, these environments are often furnished with separate products — tables and seats with different heights — resulting in fragmented layouts and increased spatial occupation. At the same time, the growing presence of digital devices has made integrated charging points an essential requirement within public spaces.

Design question

How might we design a compact and flexible furniture system capable of supporting both seated and standing interaction, while optimizing shared spaces and encouraging social connection in contemporary public environments?

The solution

USO.jpg

A hybrid furniture system designed for contemporary shared spaces, combining seated and standing interaction within a single compact element. The product integrates different heights and device charging solutions to support multiple modes of use while optimizing space efficiently in environments such as lounges, airports, workplaces, and cafés.

The structure is made from two 1 cm folded aluminum sheets assembled together, creating a clean and continuous form that defines both seating and table surfaces. Its shape enhances flexibility and spatial efficiency while naturally encouraging social interaction and conviviality between users.
