Design premise

Contemporary shared spaces, such as break areas, lounges,

airports, cafes, and collaborative work environments, are characterized by high levels of dynamism, a constant flow of people, and a constant presence of visual and audio stimuli. While they foster

interaction and socialization, they often lack the opportunity for

privacy and tranquility.

In these contexts, the need to temporarily isolate oneself from the surrounding chaos to concentrate, converse privately, or simply recharge during a break emerges. Market analysis highlights the existence of acoustic solutions to improve sound comfort and systems to define more intimate spaces, but these two functions are rarely integrated into a single product.

This creates the need for a solution capable of combining acoustic comfort and spatial flexibility, allowing for the easy creation of temporary privacy areas within shared spaces.

Design question

How might we transform a passive acoustic element into an active system capable of flexibly creating temporary spaces of privacy and acoustic comfort within shared and dynamic environments, without permanently occupying space?

The solution

An aesthetic and functional acoustic solution that, thanks to the integration of a flexible sound-absorbing fabric, a tensile structure, and a lighting system, combines two distinct modes of use in a single system.

In its passive configuration, the product appears as a suspended, aesthetic acoustic chandelier that contributes to improving the sound and light quality of the environment.

The true innovation emerges in the active phase. When people want to enjoy a moment of privacy, the structure drops from the ceiling and, through a system of tension cables, opens into a dome shape that creates a cozy and protected space, isolating users visually and acoustically from the surrounding environment. Inside the dome, the lighting can be customized to create more relaxing atmospheres.

Unlike traditional acoustic solutions, which are often limited to a single function, the product maintains constant 360-degree functionality, optimizing the available space without taking up floor space.
